VISUAL ANTHOLOGY DEBATE PUBLICATION EVALUATION:

For my Editorial illustration project, I picked the topic Environment, and chose a satirical article about a scientist studying Polar Bears trying to build rockets to fly away from global warming.
Illustrating humor is something still quite new to me, but I wanted to challenge myself to try a different method of visual communication.

In this project I researched the mechanics of aerospace engineering, info-graphics on the Arctic and Polar Bears habitats and behaviors, the history of satirical illustration and the components of children’s magazines, to create a funny, colorful final piece. I was inspired by different artists, publishers and  media to create this final piece.

I found the humor aspect of the project most tricky to convey. I think I wanted my illustrations to stick to the text too much, which limited my imagination to create more outgoing, eccentric drawings. To help with this I looked at different types of humor, mostly slapstick and dark, in old comedy shows, to see how I could incorporate that into my drawings.

If I was to do this project again, I wouldn’t hold myself back as much, because editorial illustration is your own interpretation of the text, and I think I was too scared of straying from the text to push myself to the limits of what I could have portrayed.

However, overall I am happy with the outcome of this module. The workshops and lectures have taught me a lot about how to generate ideas, illustrate text, and expand my knowledge.
